CABEE Project

"CABEE" is a transnational project that aims to reduce CO2 emissions through ecological building. This includes the development and establishment of effective planning, construction support and evaluation methods. The local existing different approaches, explained by Johannes Zauner of the Office of Research and Development at the University of Rosenheim, should be harmonized and to be developed in  "affordable and mass-market instruments". "CABEE" wants to but more. The gained knowledge should be easily accessible and in best case influence future EU directives. The fact that all participants first examine the existing buildings in their region, can guarantee the regional character of the participating countries.

Important is also for the partners, as expressed by Peter Steurer from the Regional Development Vorarlberg cooperative, to reach the widest possible dissemination. Finally, the project should contribute to demonstrate the CO2-reducing effect with the application of specific construction materials. According to the wishes of the initiators, an example function is played by the public sector; Imitation effect to the private and the corporate sector are encouraged.

At the end of the three year project period, the scientists and construction experts have found a common knowledge platform for ecological construction. Ultimate goal is the contribution of the Alpine countries to other European parallel initiatives and subsequently also to receive assistance from EU-wide policies regarding sustainable building in the public sector. "One of the main concerns of all the regions involved is to involve the local construction industry in the implementation of environmental building concepts," said Steurer. The project consortium expects effective effects for the regional construction industry as well as a corresponding reduction in CO2. By this the project has equally environmental as well as employment-related aspects.
